MOL, COSCO Team up to Launch "MOL Class" at Dalian Maritime University

TOKYO - Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL, President: Akimitsu Ashida) today announced that the company has established the "MOL Class" at China's Dalian Maritime University, tying up with COSCO Dalian(Dalian Ocean Shipping Co.). MOL will promote the development of cadet seafarers who should play a key role in improving the safety and efficiency of maritime operations.

MOL offers its unique safety education and practical training on MOL-operated vessels in MOL Classes to be opened at maritime universities around the world. This allows the company to promote its basic stance of "Safety is the Top Priority"" from the beginning of the training process.

Objectives for opening MOL Class, and background of tie-up with COSCO Dalian

MOL offers high-level education and training and recruits Chinese seafarers who serve aboard MOL-operated vessels through,

  • Utilize COSCO Dalian's track record and know-how in training tanker officers and crew members.
  • Collaborate with China's leading seafarer education and educational facilities of Dalian Maritime University.

Outline of MOL Class

The goal is to develop higher quality personnel through high-level safety education and other training.

    Training on MOL-operated vessels
    Practical training by simulators and other real machinery and equipment at the university
    Disciplined group life at student dormitories
    MOL Group's unique training sessions provided by MOL Tankship Management Ltd.

MOL has proactively expanded its fleet scale in along with the three-year mid-term management plan MOL STEP (revised as MOL STEP Review in May 2005). The company is working to expand its fleet to 900 vessels by fiscal year 2009. At the same time, the company operates its own seafarer manning and management companies and crew training centers all over the world, reflecting its commitment to developing high-quality seafarers for MOL-operated vessels.
