New Container Terminal to be Developed in Rotterdam

TOKYO - Mitsui O.S.K.Lines, Ltd. (MOL, President: Akimitsu Ashida) today announced that a consortium consisting of MOL and four other companies has been awarded a contract to equip and operate a new container terminal in Port of Rotterdam. The facility is scheduled to open in latter half of 2013.

*MOL's partners of the consortium are APL (Singapore), Hyundai Merchant Marine (South Korea), CMA CGM (France), and DPWorld (Dubai)

Details of the project

MOL and the four other companies will jointly establish a terminal operation company, which will be named "Rotterdam World Gateway", and sign a 25-year lease contract with the port of Rotterdam.

Objective

The new container terminal will be equipped with the most advanced facilities as well as on-dock rail and road networks, and will serve as the gateway to Europe. The consortium will operate and manage the most efficient and environmentally friendly container terminal possible in order to strengthen container services. The terminal will be a key hub in Europe.

Background

MOL has enhanced its container services in Europe by proactive fleet expansion, and ensures the stability of its services. In response to the booming European economy in recent years and anticipated growth in containerized cargo traffic, the company saw a critical need to develop a new terminal in Rotterdam to ease congestion in the port.
