Moving Supplies for Tsunami Relief
Earth-moving equipment donated by the City of New York for Tsunami relief in Indonesia is staged at the pier at Northeast Auto Marine Terminal pier in New Jersey.
MOL donated space on the RORO vessel Cougar Ace in February for a shipment of earth-moving and construction machinery from New York City to Indonesia, via Singapore, for use in the Tsunami relief effort.

The relief shipment was organized by World Vision International, an organization at the forefront of the effort to aid Tsunami victims and the countries affected by the disaster.

The 12 pieces of machinery– including front-end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, and dump trucks – were donated by the City of New York to help the devastated communities in Indonesia, hardest hit by the Tsunami disaster.

The shipment was loaded at Northeast Auto Marine Terminal (NEAT) in Jersey City, New Jersey. NEAT and the Port Authority of NY and NJ joined MOL in donating their services and waiving all terminal charges for the shipment.

The Amazing Race Promotes Team Building
A lot of people watch the reality TV show "The Amazing Race," but those who attended MOL's annual sales and operations meeting in Canada got to experience a version of the "race" firsthand.

A Vancouver, British Columbia tour operator organized the three-hour race and team building exercise modeled on the popular television program. The 20 meeting participants were split into two primary teams (red and yellow), and each team was further divided into three mini-teams of three or four members. Racers competed for both their primary team and mini-team on a multi-faceted sprint through the streets, buildings, and waterways of downtown Vancouver.

"The Amazing Race" Participants
The race itself challenged the participants both mentally and physically. Each mini-team started with a clue they had to decipher to reveal the location of the first checkpoint. Teams then ran, jogged, or walked to the first checkpoint, a small box on the observation deck of the Harbour Centre marked with the "Amazing Race" logo. The box held the location of the second checkpoint, but again a riddle had to be solved to learn its location. Teams continued on foot, bus, and water taxi from checkpoint to checkpoint for approximately three hours.  They also had to overcome special challenges (known as "roadblocks" or "detours" in race parlance) at some checkpoints before they could continue.  These challenges included eating a bag of dried herring, shopping in a Chinatown market, painting a watercolor portrait of their mini-team, shucking oysters, and even kayaking in False Creek, each of which had to be completed in order to continue the race.

Eight checkpoints and many challenges later, every team finished the race exhausted but satisfied. The red team won the primary team competition, while Brian McDonald, Liz McGovern, and Aaron Groves finished first in the mini-team competition. But the real winner in this team-building exercise was camaraderie.  "The Amazing Race" was conceived as a way to build a closer working relationship among the participants, and in this it was very successful. Brian McDonald summarized this aspect of the race when he said, "The Amazing Race was great fun, and all our staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There's nothing like a little competition to bring people together. Hopefully the experiences we shared will result in us being an even more cohesive team in the future."

Regional Agency and Trade Area Meetings Held in Panama

MOL (Panama) Inc. hosted regional agency and area meetings February 14-16. With the recent expansion of the Americas trade to include a highly competitive West Coast South America service (ACW), both meetings focused on improving service quality and increasing MOL's profitability in the trade. The agency meeting included the Concord Area Management Team (CCRAT), Americas Area Management, MOL (Brazil), MOL (Chile) and MOL's agents from the Caribbean and Central America. The Americas' Area Management meeting included all four U.S. regions, MOL (Brazil), MOL (Chile) and MOL (Panama), which met with the Area Operations and Area Administration teams.

The agency meeting was organized by CCRAT and conducted by MOLAM Trade Services VP Frank Masi and Americas Trade Marketing Manager David Blackmer. The goal of the meeting was to define existing or near-future opportunities and proactive approaches to issues that may affect MOL's service and financial performance in the trade. The group discussed coordinated sales strategies aimed at meeting MOL's area business objectives, and focused specifically on the intra-Latin trades, including services to and from Central America, the Caribbean, the Amazon, the East and West Coasts of South America and services and connections to and from North America and Northern Europe. The event was successful in promoting team building and in advancing the cooperation among CCRAT, Americas Area Management and the agencies operating either as MOL subsidiaries or as MOL agents of the countries represented.

MOLAM's Americas' Area Management meeting was organized and conducted by EVP & COO Ray Keene. It included only the Americas region and marked the first time Area Operations and Administration teams met simultaneously with all four U.S. regions, MOL (Brazil), MOL (Chile) and MOL (Panama). Given the projected growth potential of the trade, the restricted meeting allowed the participants to focus on implementing cost-efficiencies that would minimize the impact of the trade's historically low rate levels. The goal of the meeting was to increase MOL's profitability by enhancing the understanding of the administration and operational challenges in the various areas of the trade, examining management's solutions to these challenges, as well as advancing cross-border sales initiatives and establishing area specific profit/loss parameters.

In addition to new ACW (Americas Coast West) service, the MOL's Americas service profile includes the CX1 (Caribbean Express), NCA (North Caribbean), GEX (Gulf Express), ACE (Americas Coast East), and the ISA (Intra South America) services.
