On Tuesday, October 28, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto; Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo) held a session "Thinking about social contributions - Lessons from the WAKASHIO Incident and Insights into the MOL Group's Initiatives." This event was conducted for officers and employees of the MOL Group, both in Japan and overseas, as an opportunity to reflect on the knowledge gained from environmental conservation and community support activities in Mauritius, and to consider how each employee of the group member should engage in social contribution activities.
At the beginning of the session, President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto looked back on the significance of collaborating with local communities, based on past experiences, and expressed the intention to further strengthen efforts toward realizing a sustainable society, building on these lessons. Following the opening remarks, the group's social contribution policy was reaffirmed, and the latest initiatives in three priority areas- marine environmental conservation, next-generation human resource development, and addressing local community challenges—were introduced. MOL (Mauritius) Ltd, the local subsidiary in Mauritius, shared the latest status of environmental conservation and community support activities in Mauritius, carried out through two funds (Note 1).
In the latter half, the Sustainability Promotion Office of Nihon Tug-Boat Co., Ltd., a MOL group company engaged in the tugboat business, shared concrete examples of on-site initiatives, such as the introduction of environmentally friendly vessels, employee volunteer activities, and cleaning activities using the "Seabin" automated marine debris collection device.
Finally, MOL's Chief Sustainability Officer, Toru Hikima, reaffirmed that social contribution activities are important not only for enhancing corporate value but also for contributing to human resource development and strengthening organizational engagement.
MOL aims to foster a strong awareness of safe operations and raise awareness of sustainability among all employees, while never letting the memory of the Wakashio incident fade away. The group is also committed to coexisting with stakeholders and to the sustainable development and advancement of local communities.
