Mr. Junichiro Ikeda, the Chairman of the Board of MOL, visited Mauritius from September 4 through September 7, 2024. Mr. Ikeda has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Mauritius in Tokyo in August 2023 (Note 1).

On Wednesday, September 18, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto; Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo) held a session "Thinking about social contributions - Lessons from the WAKASHIO Incident and Insights into the MOL Group's Initiatives." After the grounding and oil spill incident involving the MOL chartered vessel WAKASHIO, MOL provided assistance to Mauritius through two funds: the MOL Mauritius International Fund for Natural Environment Recovery and Sustainability (the Fund) (Note 1) and the MOL Charitable Trust (the "Trust") (Note 2). The session was held as a follow-up event to the WAKASHIO Memorial Day, which has been held annually since 2021, with the aim of considering how each and every executive and employee in the group should engage in social contribution activities, with the goal of linking social contribution activities in Mauritius to the development of all people and communities related to the group.

On Monday September 9, 2024, Shizuoka University, which received a grant from the MOL Mauritius International Fund for Natural Environment Recovery and Sustainability (the "Fund) (Note 1), along with its collaborating institution, the University of Mauritius (UoM), held a research presentation on "Coral Reef and its Associated Biodiversity Under Climate Change" for Hotel staff from sunlife Ltd., local students, and researchers who gathered at the Hotel of sunlife Group in the eastern part of the island.

The Trust was established with the goal of supporting social and environmental projects in line with the intent of the Trust, focusing on activities in the southeast of Mauritius.

- Beach Cleanup Event on World Oceans Day

On Saturday, June 8 2024, in cooperation with local NGO EcoMode Society (Note 1) and the University of Mauritius, MOL (Mauritius) Ltd. conducted a beach cleanup in commemoration of World Oceans Day. The event was held on the beach of Rivière des Créoles, and drew a total of about 100 volunteers, as well as officials from the three host organizations, staff from the Japanese Embassy in Mauritius, and local fishermen. The beach activity was a valuable opportunity to promote environmental conservation in the local coastal area, raise environmental awareness among participants, and deepen cooperation with the community.

On Monday, April 29, 2024, "Caritas Mauritius" (hereinafter called Caritas) (Note 1), a local NGO funded by the MOL Charitable Trust(the Trust )(Note 2), held a ceremony to celebrate the completion of a program aimed at helping residents gain essential life skills and prepare for employment. On June 11, MOL Mauritius International Fund for Natural Environment Recovery and Sustainability (Note1) held an online meeting to report the outcome of the projects implemented in the Republic of Mauritius. At the beginning of the meeting, the chairperson, Mariko Kawaguchi, spoke about her firsthand experience of seeing the passion with which each organization tackled social issues during her previous project inspection in Mauritius. The objective is to introduce the audience to a wide range of activities and results of the funded projects to promote environmental restoration and conservation in Mauritius and contribute to local communities.

This third round of grants centers on projects in line with the priority areas of the MOL Group's policy of corporate citizenship activities: "marine environment," "biodiversity," and "human resources development" (Note 3).The 15 newly selected projects will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society and the achievement of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

- Giving out Christmas Gifts to Children

On Wednesday, December 20, and Thursday, December 21, 2023, MOL (Mauritius) Ltd teamed up with Celero Ltd. (Note 1) to give out Christmas gifts to children. In this annual event, the companies presented gifts to children aged 3 to 10 years old living in Bambous Virieux and Mahebourg in southeastern Mauritius.

On Thursday, July 20, the MOL Charitable Trust (the "Trust") (Note) held a roundtable meeting of local education-related NGOs. It was the second roundtable meeting, following last year’s event, with the objective of sharing knowledge and boosting cooperation among local NGOs. The theme of this year's roundtable was "The Role of Parents in Education and Effective Involvement," and participants included representatives of 14 local organizations working in the field of education and members of the Trust's Committee of Enforcers.

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL: President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that on Sunday, September 3, the company held a hands-on event in front of the coral aquarium at the entrance hall of the Head Office. The event, featuring renowned experts on coral reefs, was aimed at elementary and junior high school students. the main goal was to deepen the understanding of coral reefs ecosystems, and the corals itself, an organism that most people have few opportunities to encounter, and to provide an opportunity to think about the conservation of the marine environment and the protection of biodiversity. Several experts from Shizuoka University's Graduate School of Science and Technology (Note 1) were invited to act as lecturers and navigators for this event. Participants listened to a lecture on the main theme, "Secrets of the Coral," followed by the experimental part of the program, in which children observed under a microscope the zooxanthellae, one species of phytoplankton that coexists in symbiosis with corals, the feeding behavior of corals, and the fluorescent proteins of the corals, which glow under dark conditions. The event concluded with a quiz and a summary covering several topics on the ocean, and climate change.

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the authorized public trust MOL Mauritius International Fund for Natural Environment Recovery and Sustainability (the "Fund") (note 1) held an online project outcome session in Japan and the Republic of Mauritius.During the session, seven of the 11 NGOs selected for 2022 grant recipient projects reported on the results of their activities over the past year. An event room was organized in Mauritius, where local NGO groups attended in person and their presentations were broadcasted in real time to Japan, inspiring a lively exchange of opinions.

On September 4 at the Prime Minister's Office in Port Louis, the capital of the Republic of Mauritius, in the presence of the Honourable Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius and Mr. Shuichiro Kawaguchi, the Ambassador of Japan to Mauritius, The Honourable Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, conferred the Letter of Commission to Junichiro Ikeda.

On Thursday, August 3 and Friday, August 4, MOL held online events marking "Wakashio Memorial Day" in recognition of the three-year milestone of the July 25, 2020 (local time) grounding and oil spill incident off the island of Mauritius involving the MOL-chartered Capesize bulker Wakashio. The memorial was an opportunity for group executives and employees in Japan and overseas to review the response to the incident. The objective is to reaffirm the awareness of the group executives and employees regarding the prevention of recurrence of such incidents and to reflect on MOL's support related to Mauritius.

On Saturday, December 31, 2022, the local NGO "RESPECT" (Note 1), funded by the MOL Charitable Trust (the Trust) (Note 2), opened an agricultural training center in Mare Tabac and started operation on the same day. RESPECT is an organization which provides trainings and supports to young farmers by providing theoretical education and hands-on training on efficient agricultural techniques. RESPECT was committed to the construction of a greenhouse, which will serve as the training hub of the project on the long term.

This event was aimed at encouraging students to think about their own careers and career paths through lectures by working professionals in the global field of ocean shipping. n Monday, August 1, 2022, and Friday, August 5, 2022, MOL held an online event called "Wakashio Memorial Day" for MOL Group executives and employees in Japan and overseas, respectively, to reflect on MOL's response to the two-year milestone from the grounding and oil spill incident involving the MOL-chartered bulk carrier Wakashio off Mauritius on July 25, 2020. The purpose of the event was to reaffirm the awareness of the group's executives and employees regarding the prevention of any recurrence of such incidents and to reflect on MOL's supports related to Mauritius. At the event, "MOL for Mauritius," website featuring its activities regarding Mauritius, was introduced, and showed the documentary video "Mauritius Blue/Nou Avec Zot - We are with you," which summarizes its activities for Mauritius after July 2020. It also introduced the authorized public trust "MOL Mauritius International Fund for Natural Environment Recovery and Sustainability" (Note 1), established in Japan on November 30, 2021, and FY2021 grant recipients, along with a detailed look at their activities. An employee assigned to an MOL subsidiary in Mauritius, MOL (Mauritius) Ltd., and continues to implement these activities, also reported on the efforts of the MOL Charitable Trust (Note 2) established by MOL in Mauritius.

Mr. Junichiro Ikeda, the Chairman of the Board of MOL, visited Mauritius from November 9 through November 13, 2021. During his stay, he observed the wreckage of the Wakashio, still in the process of being dismantled and removed, and toured the entire area of Mahebourg, which was affected by the oil spill. A resurgence of COVID-19 infections has made life more difficult for people in the region who had already faced difficult economic and social conditions since the first lockdown in March 2020, including fishermen (registered and non-registered) and boatmen who were also severely impacted by the oil spill.

On April 1, we have established the Environment & Sustainability Strategy Division as an organization that oversees MOL Group environmental strategies and initiatives on sustainable development, and carry forward these strategies and initiatives on a company-wide, cross-sectional basis(*). It works under the following mission: "An initiative in which charity would at the same time be devotion and expertise." Reef Conservation(*) is a Mauritius-based NGO engaged in environmental conservation of the nation's coastline and lagoon through community conservation, research, and education. - Delivering Christmas presents to local families with NGO

On December 22, together with the NGO Precious Plastic Mauritius (*) (founder: Mr. Valery de Falbaire), MOL delivered Christmas presents to 9 families living in extreme poverty in the deprived areas of Mahebourg, located on the South-East part of Mauritius. The organization is collaborating with other inhabitants of the area to help those families in addition to its major activity of recycling plastic waste. The MOL dispatched team in Mauritius joined their initiatives and helped them by giving our original Mauritius T-shirts and masks. The children and their families also received toys and cookies. MOL will continue to cooperate with the NGO to support deprived families in the region.

- Co-hosting a Christmas Party with the Government of Mauritius and the Embassy of Japan

On December 23, the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries & Shipping, the Japanese Embassy and MOL jointly hosted a Christmas Party for some 250 primary school students within the nearby villages affected by the oil spill incident as well as their parents at Bamboo Virieux located near Mahebourg in collaboration with CELERO Group, the local partner of MOL.

On Thursday, December 10, MOL dispatched team met with Mahebourg Espoir, a local NGO actively involved in helping poor communities in Mahebourg, which is one of the closest towns within the oil polluted area where many local residents derive their living solely on the sea for fishing. The NGO operates the Mahebourg Espoir Education Centre (MEEC) for children coming from vulnerable families who have been dropped out of school.

As a part of the Natural Environmental Protection and Recovery Project, MOL has been conducting a survey of the impact on birds in cooperation with Yamashina Institute for Ornithology and BirdLife International Tokyo. Hereunder, we would like to introduce a column by Masayoshi Kamioki, a Research Fellow at BirdLife International Tokyo*, who has been conducting local survey in Mauritius since October 25. In order to restore Mauritius' original, beautiful nature and ecosystems, MOL will continue its contributions to support the recovery of the environment.

- Procuring supplies and equipment, transporting them to the site

MOL has procured supplies and equipment (*) used to collect and remove leaked oil and arranged for emergency transport. The first items arrived on the site on Sunday, August 23. The six MOL members on the site are in discussions with some of the organizations involved to ensure their effective use in the necessary spots. They received thanks from government leaders including the vice prime minister at the incident emergency response meeting. The second shipment of items were to be scheduled to arrive around Friday, August 28. We will continue planning to provide necessary items for on-site cleanup of the oil spill.

- Distribution of original T-shirts and facemasks

On Friday, October 16, and Monday, 26th, our original T-shirts and facemasks, prepared by MOL, were distributed at the oil spill cleanup site. The T-shirt distribution was based on a proposal from local people after members of the MOL-dispatched team met and exchanged opinions with many residents and groups. The T-shirts are mainly for local citizens, including fishermen who are involved in the cleanup work, to wear as the inner layer of their personal protective equipment (PPE).

On Friday, October 16, six members of the MOL second dispatched team, who had worked in Mauritius since the end of August, have left the site, and on Thursday, October 22, two new members arrived as our fourth dispatched team. The team plans to officially join local activities after the government-designated isolation period and confirmation of their PCR testing results.

On Friday, October 9, the MOL-dispatched team visited a public school in Bois Des Amourettes, which had been forced to close for four days due to the offensive odor caused by the oil spill. On Tuesday, October 6, members of the MOL-dispatched team visited two local schools. At the Special Education Needs (SEN) School they visited in the morning, they created paper airplanes with the children and then went outdoors to see them fly. We also presented other origami works made by the team leader that the students could play with, such as cranes and shuriken throwing stars.

The mandatory COVID-19 isolation period for the third dispatched team ended on October 6, and on the same day, they started full-scale on-site activities after PCR testing on all members showed that they were negative for the virus.

- MOL Announces Initiatives aiming for recovery of Environmental Damage from the Wakashio Incident, and to Contribute to the Mauritian Community

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Junichiro Ikeda) today announced to provide long-term contributions to the environment and the society of Mauritius with the support and cooperation of experts and organizations with specialized knowledge of environmental restoration and protection, and working closely with the government of Japan. Thirteen MOL Group employees have been dispatched to the site, and MOL has procured and transported essential items for the collection and recovery of leaked oil as well as other relief supplies. The details of the projects are as follows.

- The first MOL-dispatched team starts the activities

The first MOL-dispatched team, after completing their 14-day isolation period, began full-scale activities on Wednesday, August 26.They have examined measures and contributions that MOL can or must do, formulated plans, and put them into action. They listened to the views of more than 50 people representing about 30 organizations in all (Note), including officials from government agencies in both Mauritius and Japan, NGOs and other groups, and the local Japanese Association. The team also participated regularly in local emergency response meetings and worked to gain a thorough grasp of the local situation by gathering information from various perspectives through a designated local shipping agency and gained support to ensure that the team's on-site activities will proceed smoothly.

The "Mauritius Environmental and Social Contribution Team" was established within the MOL Corporate Planning Division as of Tuesday, September 1. The new team's responsibilities are shown in the chart below. Three full-time members were officially appointed and have already started their activities. Furthermore, we plan to enhance the structure of the team by assigning about 10 members who will take part in team activities in addition to their regular duties in other divisions.
