Principle 2 : For Biodiversity and Nature

The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) on biodiversity held in October 2010 in Nagoya was an occasion that raised awareness in Japan of efforts to protect biodiversity and ecosystems.

One of the guiding principles of MOL social contribution activities is to contribute to protecting biodiversity and preserving nature as a company that impacts the environment to an extent, and as a company that does business on the ocean, a rich repository of living organisms. MOL is committed to expanding its activities in this respect.

Malaysia

Planting 100 Mangrove Seedlings

In November 2011, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (Malaysia) Sd. Bhd. collaborated with Malaysian Nature Society in its first CSR endeavor to plant 100 mangrove saplings at Sepang, Selangor.

Hong Kong

Cleaning up the Sea Shore

In October 2011, 30 MOL volunteers and family members demonstrated our commitment to protecting the marine environment.

India

Participation in "Say NO to Plastic Bags" Campaign and Tree Planting

In June 2001, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (India) Pvt. Ltd. participated in a "Say NO to Plastic Bags" campaign on World Environment Day(*) and tree-planting activities.

(*)Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, this annual event (June 5 every year) is designated as a day for conducting activities that promote awareness of environmental protection.

U.S. (Chicago)

Forest Protection Activity

Inspired by MOL Head Office's beach cleanup project, the MOL (America) Inc. Chicago Office decided to undertake the forest protection activity at DuPage County.

Japan

Assisting in Marine and Hydrographic Research

For many years, MOL has observed marine weather and reported its observations to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and other weather organizations around the world. The contribution of these activities to advances in meteorological precision has been recognized externally. The car carrier Solar Wing was awarded a commendation in fiscal 2011 by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, while the LNG carrier LNG Vesta and the steaming coal carrier Soma Maru.

Japan

Beach Cleanup

We have conducted beach cleanups at Odaiba Seaside Park in Tokyo and Yuigahama Beach in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, since 2000. In 2012, in addition to these locations, we also cleaned the beach at Hirai, Kashima City in Ibaraki Prefecture.

Thailand

Beach Cleanup and Tree Planting

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2008, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (Thailand) Co., Ltd. established the CSR Committee to raise employee awareness of social contribution and instill pride in the company. The employee-led committee decided to conduct a tree-planting campaign and beach cleanup in fiscal 2010, the third year of the committee. Some 230 officers and employees helped plant a total of 500 seedlings.

Tanzania

Support for Tree Planting

MOL collects used stamps and cards from its own employees and those at Group companies, which it sends to Tanzania Pole Pole Club, a citizen's group in Tokyo. The group then sells the stamps and cards to collectors, using the funds to support tree-planting activities by Tanzanian villagers.

Japan

Participation in Forest Planting and Thinning Activities

Since 2009, employee volunteers from Group company M.O. Tourist Co., Ltd. taken part in JATA Forest, a tree planting and thinning activity sponsored by the Japan Association of Travel Agents.
