MOL (America) Implements Sustainability Education Program for Stanford University Students

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that its subsidiary in the U.S. MOL (America) LLC (MOLAM; President: Yasuhiro Suzuka) has conducted a sustainability education program for students of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability (Note), the first new school established in 70 years at Stanford University in California, U.S. This program was organized with cooperation from the Los Angeles/Long Beach Port Authorities, Toyota Motor North America, Toyota Tsusho America, Inc., Iwatani Corporation, and the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles. As part of the program, MOLAM introduced the use of next-generation clean energy such as hydrogen in ports and various other decarbonization initiatives, giving students a deeper understanding of the shipping industry and its innovative steps to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability in ports and harbors.

MOL Managing Executive Officer responsible for the Americas Area Tomoaki Ichida told the program participants, "Shipping is an important lifeline that supports the livelihoods of people around the world. We need to decarbonize and transform ourselves into a sustainable industry to continue to offer value for future generations."

Dr. Jimmy Chen, Co-Managing Director of the Hydrogen Initiative at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability's Precourt Institute for Energy, commented, "We are grateful to the leadership of MOL for organizing and planning the Stanford student field trip to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The students share a passion for decarbonizing transportation, and the chance to experience the opportunity and scale of the challenge was riveting. Thank you for helping us educate and prepare tomorrow's leaders and problem solvers."

(Note) The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, a newly established school of Stanford University, was created to address the effects of climate change and promote interdisciplinary research that addresses climate and sustainability issues facing people and ecosystems worldwide.
