Pradeep Karkada Ganesh was born in Mangaluru, India. He began his career with MOL as a Junior Engineer in 2005. After gaining over 15 years of sailing experience aboard various MOL vessels, he transitioned to a shore-based role and now serves as a Deputy Manager at MOL Ship Management Co., Ltd., overseeing ship operations from the Singapore office.

A Childhood of Dreaming Beyond the Horizon

What led you to your current job?
I grew up in Mangaluru, a port city in India. There were shipyards and beaches all around me, so the sea was always close by. When I was little, I used to look at the vessels on the horizon and wonder, "How do those ships move? What kind of people work on them?" That curiosity led me to study marine engineering at university. As I gained experience and advanced in my career at sea, I came to realize management's importance in supporting ships, alongside the technology that propels them. After 15 years at sea, I now work in ship management at an office in Singapore.
Interpreting Data for Safety at Sea
Tell us about a typical day for you.
My day starts with checking reports and emails from ships, as well as analyzing ship operation data and equipment status with the Fleet Optimal Control Unified System, or FOCUS. FOCUS is MOL's proprietary system for integrating vast amounts of sensor data and report information collected from ships. Analytics employ the operational knowledge that MOL has accumulated over many years. When a ship's performance is deteriorating, we must identify the cause. If it requires an emergency response, we coordinate with the captain, chief engineer, and manufacturer to take immediate action. At the Singapore office where I work, we have four teams managing sixty ships. Our work also entails everything from ship maintenance planning and dry dock inspection preparations to arrangements for procuring parts. Every day brings new challenges, so no two are the same. Even so, our goal remains constant: to maintain the highest standards of safety and compliance while efficiently operating vessels.

Full Support with Faith in the Crew's Insights

Tell us about an event at work that
made an impression on you.
The most fulfilling moments are when we restore a vessel that was having problems. One particularly memorable case was when a sudden power outage during a voyage caused a ship to lose propulsion and power. There are no service stations at sea, so the crew and team on shore have to work together to quickly diagnose and solve the problem. My motto is prioritizing the crew's insights and supporting them so they can perform at their best. The crew is on the front lines, and the information they gather themselves is crucial for decision-making. In this case also, the ship's crew worked systematically, and our team on land coordinated with the engine manufacturer while providing the crew with technical support remotely. Ultimately, a fuel supply malfunction was identified as the cause, and we got the ship running again in splendid fashion. I was impressed by how our teamwork ensured the ship's safety.
A Mentor Today, Shaped by Yesterday's Teamwork
What do your coworkers mean to you?
When I first joined the company, I was one of the youngest in my team, working with highly experienced colleagues. Initially, it was challenging to match their expertise, but the work culture at MOL is very supportive. Senior colleagues are always willing to offer advice. MOL's culture of teamwork and mentorship has helped me grow as a professional. My coworkers' support made me the person I am today. Beyond teamwork on the job, there is a sense of friendship that makes problem-solving easier and work more enjoyable. Now that I'm in a leadership role, I'm also responsible for mentoring Sailing staff.

Delivering the Ships that Transport the Future in Top Condition

When are you reminded that you are
a member of the MOL Group?
One moment when I thought that "this is the MOL Group" was when we delivered the Cielo Ace to Shin Kurushima Dockyard's Onishi Shipyard on January 28, 2025. The Cielo Ace, one of the Blue series of LNG carriers, represents a major step forward in reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability. I was responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of the ship's delivery, ensuring that all systems and equipment met the highest standards. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience to participate in this project, which is a key focus for the MOL Group, and to take on the role of technical supervisor. MOL is always at the forefront of new technologies, so I intend to continue learning by engaging with many people to expand my knowledge, which I can then apply at work.
Family Time is Me Time
How do you spend your days off?
I have limited free time due to my busy schedule, so I try to spend my days off with my family and friends as much as possible. Preparing meals for my family is a relaxing time for me. It's also a way to deepen our family bonds. Outside of work, I stay active with badminton, chess, and cycling, which help me stay sharp, fit, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. During my stay in Imabari for the delivery of the Cielo Ace, I knew that the Shimanami Kaido near Shin Kurushima Dockyard is a famous cycling route, but I was too busy then to find the time. I'd like to take my family there next time.

A Second Home Provides Motivation

What are your dreams for the future? And say something for your colleagues working around the world.
Working for just one company for a long time is by no means easy. But MOL has given me countless opportunities. That's why this company is like a second home to me. Every person brings a different culture and experiences, but we respect those differences and work together to take on new challenges. That's what makes the MOL team special. Personally, I hope to use AI to raise our ship management capabilities to the next level, enabling us to safely and efficiently support more vessels. I encourage all my colleagues around the world to believe in your own path and continue challenging yourself. Let us support one another and carry forward the MOL spirit. Our pride will continue to maintain safety on the sea and support its future. I wish you all success in your future voyages.
