September 19, 2025

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that on Monday, September 15, (a Japanese national holiday), the Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels (Note 1) and the 7th Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting (Note 2) were held in Osaka. Attendees, including ministers from various countries, visited the Expo Osaka, Kansai. They visited MOL's booth in the "Future Life Expo: Future City Pavilion" (Note 3), part of the Future Society Showcase project, which MOL supports as a Bronze Partner.

MOL is showcasing a large scale model of the next generation zero emission vessel "Wind Hunter" (Note 4). Members from relevant countries and international organizations participating in the Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels and the Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting attended the site visit. MOL Executive Fellow Makoto Yamaguchi, in charge of the development of wind propulsion systems and related business initiatives, explained the company's decarbonization efforts, including an overview of the Wind Hunter project and its development status.

Executive Fellow Yamaguchi commented:
The members of relevant countries and international organizations listened to the explanation with great interest and enthusiasm. They offered warm words of encouragement. I believe that Wind Hunter, which produces green hydrogen using offshore wind, will become increasingly valuable as one of the means to realize a decarbonized society. Through this Expo, we received words of expectation from many people who came to understand Wind Hunter, and I feel a renewed strong determination to make the project a success. Although there are still many challenges to address before commercialization, I want to overcome them one by one, keeping these words of expectation close to my heart.

MOL is moving ahead with the construction of a Wind Hunter demonstration vessel and exploring potential hydrogen supply sources. Assuming progress in the domestic hydrogen value chain, the company aims to complete the vessel and achieve commercialization as early as the 2030s. With the Wind Hunter, MOL will contribute to the development of a green hydrogen supply chain and a decarbonized society through its technology.

(Note 1) The Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels is the first meeting to be co-hosted with Brazil as part of the promotion of the Initiative for Sustainable Fuels and Mobility: ISFM (Isefam), which was launched at the Japan-Brazil Summit Meeting in May 2024 to realize carbon neutrality by combining sustainable fuels such as biofuels and synthetic fuels, which have high potential, with Japanese high-performance mobility equipment such as hybrid engines, together with global partners. Discussions were held with the participation of relevant countries and international organizations to expand the introduction of sustainable fuels such as biofuels, synthetic fuels, and synthetic methane in various fields, in anticipation of COP30 scheduled for November 2025. (Note 2) The Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Conference is an international meeting first held in Japan in 2018. It serves as a forum to promote the global utilization of hydrogen energy and to foster coordination and cooperation among participating countries and international organizations. This year marks its seventh iteration. For Japan, the 2025 conference represents a milestone-a turning point-as efforts to realize a hydrogen society accelerate, including the upcoming enforcement of the Hydrogen Society Promotion Act in October 2024. Under the theme of "demand creation" to stimulate global interest, discussions focused on sharing progress in national hydrogen policies and exploring opportunities for policy alignment and international collaboration.

(Note 3) "Future City" is the key element of the "Future Society Showcase," a joint exhibition project by the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition and 12 sponsoring companies and organizations, and one of the largest pavilions at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. The showcase includes the "Future Experience" with 15 attractions. For more information about Future City and the sponsorship and exhibits, please see the links below.
