AI-Driven Transformation

Concept of AI-driven Transformation

In addition to deepening the "standardization of business processes" and "data utilization" that have been promoted so far, we aim to drive transformation across all business areas through AI, including a shift to speedy and highly accurate management and business decision-making using AI, as well as redesigning operations and talent utilization.

Company-wide Integrated Data Platform

Our company is pursuing digital transformation (DX) as a core management strategy. At the heart of this DX initiative is the company‑wide integrated data platform, "MOL PEARL (PEARL)."

PEARL is a project designed to integrate and visualize data across the MOL Group with the goal of improving operational efficiency and advancing decision‑making. It consolidates a wide range of internal and external data-including accounting, sales, operations, environmental and safety, and market data-and supports DX from a data perspective.

Traditionally, data was managed separately within individual systems, and differences in definitions and coding structures meant that analyses across departments or use cases required significant coordination and manual effort.

With PEARL, data management-from data collection through processing and integration-is handled on the platform side. By organizing and standardizing data, including entity resolution and master data integration, PEARL provides common data that everyone can use with the same understanding. This enhances data reusability in day‑to‑day operations and improves overall data reliability.

Currently, PEARL is being utilized for management control, business analysis, environmental initiatives such as GHG emissions reduction, and the visualization of various business operations. The scope of data domains and use cases continues to expand in a phased manner.

Looking ahead, we aim to train AI on PEARL's data so that users can simply ask questions in natural language and receive not only the relevant information but also actionable insights. By enabling people and AI to collaboratively analyze data, we seek to uncover latent business opportunities and areas for improvement that have not previously been apparent, leading to greater value creation. With this future vision in mind, PEARL continues to evolve.

Integrated Data Platform (MOL PEARL)

We continue to evolve the integrated data platform, expanding both the data we handle and our data utilization capabilities.

Future Vision for AI Utilization

  • AI learns from standardized PEARL data
  • Information discovery and insight generation through natural language queries
  • Creation of new insights and value through human-AI interaction

Business Process Optimization

At our company, we have adopted BPM (Business Process Management) as a common methodology and are working to visualize, standardize, and continuously improve business processes, with a particular focus on the Sales & Operations and Financial & Accounting domains. In addition, to effectively advance the use of AI, it is essential to clearly define the underlying business processes that serve as the source of data and to establish an environment in which data is accumulated naturally through daily operations. As we move into an era of hyperautomation - where autonomous AI agents operate independently at speed - BPM serves as a blueprint that helps define boundaries and guide operations.

Based on this concept, we are aiming to build an "AI-ready" operational foundation.

As a practical implementation of this approach, we have visualized the workflows and key decision points in chartering and vessel operation activities using BPM tools, and organized and digitized them as SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), which enhanced the ability to not only visualize the process details, but to better identify operational bottlenecks and focus on specific tasks to address them. These initiatives have been recognized as an advanced example of process transformation that combines digital technologies with business analysis methodologies and were awarded the Incentive Award at the Business Analysis Award 2025 hosted by the IIBA Japan Chapter.

Furthermore, we incorporate internationally recognized business analysis concepts and promote process design and digital utilization in an integrated manner. Leading company-wide and global process standardization and continuous business transformation, we collaborate with domestic and overseas IT departments, overseas offices, and teams related to RPA and AI, aiming to provide end-to-end support from process design through automation, advancement, and monitoring.

Through these initiatives, we are reducing reliance on individual expertise and clarifying decision-making processes, while globally deploying a common foundation that enables the rapid identification of targets for improvement and automation. Beyond reducing routine work, this approach enhances safety and quality, enables resources to concentrate on higher-value decision-making activities, and delivers sustainable business transformation and improved competitiveness that will support future AI utilization and advanced analytics.

Explaining the MOL's BPM Methodology

Advanced Business Management

Amid a rapidly changing business environment, our company is being called upon to make faster and more precise management decisions in order to execute our long-term strategy, "BLUE ACTION 2035."

To address this challenge, we are promoting Project VOYAGER, an initiative aimed at advancing our management capabilities.

Through this project, we are developing a management dashboard that allows executives to access the information they need in a clear and timely manner. In the past, data essential for decision-making was scattered across various internal systems, making it time-consuming to gain a comprehensive view of the business. With the cooperation of each business unit, we have therefore built a system that enables users to review business-by-business profit and loss, asset status, and cash flows on a single screen. We are also leveraging AI to streamline tasks such as issue identification, requirements definition, and preparation of related documentation. By doing so, we shorten the overall lead time of the development process and establish a framework that allows us to focus more on implementing higher value-added analytics and decision-support functions.

In addition, by visualizing each business's investment plans alongside future asset outlooks, the dashboard provides a multi-faceted view of the overall financial position of our group. This makes it possible to understand our financial health from multiple perspectives, rather than focusing on isolated metrics.

By leveraging these insights, we aim to achieve sustainable business management that emphasizes not only short-term profitability, but also the strength of our balance sheet and cash flow. Since October 2025, simulation features have been added to the dashboard, enabling its use in monitoring the progress of "BLUE ACTION 2035," supporting strategic discussions, and facilitating dialogue around individual investment decisions.

Project VOYAGER is a foundational initiative that enhances both the quality and speed of our decision-making through greater transparency in management, and supports our continued growth toward the future.

Optimal Voyage Operation Support

With the aim of reducing GHG emissions through improved fuel efficiency, we are utilizing Wayfinder-an optimal voyage operation support tool provided by the U.S. company Sofar Ocean-across our group-operated vessels.

Wayfinder provides the optimal engine speed and route for safe and efficient navigation to each ship and onshore staff daily. These recommendations leverage Sofar Ocean's real-time marine weather forecasts - powered by observations made by its global network of ocean sensors - as well as data on the vessel's fuel performance in different sea states, the status of restricted sea areas, and other constraints.

Sofar Ocean's global network of ocean sensors - known as Spotter buoys - gathers oceanographic data like wave spectra, wind, sea surface temperature, and atmospheric pressure in real time. The collected data is combined with weather data from satellites and other sources, to produce forecasts - including wave field predictions - that are up to 50% more accurate than other operational forecasts.* As waves have a great impact on efficient navigation, Wayfinder's forecasts are expected to bring significant benefit to vessels operated by the MOL Group.

* (Note) Based on short-term wave prediction comparison results with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

In trials on 40 vessels operated by the MOL Group, an average 6% reduction was recorded per voyage in fuel consumption and GHG emissions, while more than 80% of the captains who participated in the trials gave a highly positive assessment of Wayfinder's user-friendliness and the accuracy of its sea condition and weather forecasts. We are actively promoting the full-scale implementation of this tool as a means to further enhance safe and efficient operations, and as of December 2025, approximately 330 vessels are utilizing it.
