Action Plan |
2018 Results |
KPI targets: Reduce GHG emissions by 2% per unit load every year in comparison with the previous year. |
FY2018 CO2 emissions per unit load decreased by 1.4% from FY2017. |
1. Promote use and innovation of technologies for reducing environmental impact and advanced support technologies for safer vessel operation through the "ISHIN NEXT- MOL SMART SHIP PROJECT-." |
- Adopted low-friction hull paint.(13 vessels.)
- Promoted adoption of energy-saving equipment ( electric variable injection timing (VIT) systems: 10 vessels; energy-saving autopilot: 7 vessels, etc.), identified new energy-saving equipment, selected candidate vessels.
- Demonstration test of Variable Phase Cycle (VPC) is completed. Basic design is under study towards demonstration test of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC).
|
2. Participate in projects to build vessels that run on alternative fuels such as LNG and supply alternative fuels. |
- LNG-fueled tugboat was deliveried as scheduled in February
- Other LNG-fueled vessel project other than tugboat is under discussion.
- MOL has signed a long-term charter contract to operate LNG bunkering vessel with Pavilion Gas Pte Ltd in Singapore.
|
3. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using ICT to optimize sailing even further. |
Promote FOCUS project to reduce fuel consumption |
4. Utilize renewable energy such as wind and solar power for vessel propulsion and at Group-related facilities in Japan and overseas. |
the Wind Challenger Project which use wind energy to assist vessel propulsion as scheduled. Towards the launch of operations in 2022, the specifications and manufacturers have been decided this year. |
5. Create environment and emission-free businesses. |
- In LNG-to-Powership business, Karpower International B.V. (Karpowership) and MOL agreed to collaborate and decided to participate in the Mozambique powership business.
- Reduced GHGs by promoting the switch from heavy oil to LNG through expansion of the FSRU business.
|
6. Investigate emissions trading as a way to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets. |
Collected information on trends in emissions trading in Japan and overseas. |
7. Respond appropriately and proactively to air pollution prevention and the Ballast Water Management Convention. |
- In advance of tightening SOx regulation effective in 2020, verified fuel oil samples that meets the standards. Samples are provided by oil companies. Selected vessels have been equiped with SOx scrubber as part of these preparations.
- To respond to the Ballast Water Management Convention, we had installed Ballast water treatment system on 142 ships so far.
- Collected regulatory information and alerted vessels in services to respond to changing biofouling management regulations in various nations.

8. Promote modal shift in transportation by enhancing the ferry and coastal shipping business in Japan. |
Expanded space by launching larger-size newbuilding ferries and launching additional vessels to boost operating efficiency. |
