MOL Speaks at the Island States Ocean Summit 2026.
- Proposing Pathways Toward a Low-Carbon Ocean Economy -

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Jotaro Tamura, Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "MOL") participated in the Island States Ocean Summit 2026, held from June 3 to 4, 2026. The summit was hosted by The Nippon Foundation, in partnership with Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and IOC through the Ocean Decade.

The summit brought together heads of state and government leaders from island nations, high-level representatives, as well as technology and financial partners. Under the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), it aims to strengthen evidence-based, climate-resilient, and sustainable ocean planning and management.

On June 4, Toru Hikima, Chief Sustainability Officer of MOL, participated as a panelist in the session titled "Low Carbon Ocean Economy," which explored the role that Sustainable Ocean Planning and Management (SOPM)* can play in advancing the transition to a low-carbon ocean economy.
During the session, he emphasized that, for international shipping to achieve net-zero emissions, it is essential to set ambitious GHG reduction targets and introduce concrete regulatory frameworks-including economic instruments such as carbon pricing, as well as clear fuel regulations. -to realize these targets. He also noted the importance of developing institutional frameworks within SOPM that enable decarbonization efforts to translate into competitive advantages for companies.

Under its management plan "BLUE ACTION 2035 Phase 2," MOL has positioned environmental initiatives as a core strategy. Guided by its "Environmental Vision – BLUE ACTION 2035 Phase 2," MOL is promoting initiatives to achieve its medium- to long-term targets, including "net-zero GHG emissions by 2050."
Through these efforts, MOL will contribute to the decarbonization of the shipping industry as a whole, in alignment with the objectives of SOPM.
