Safety Awareness Reform

Safety Conferences

As a part of our measures to ensure safe operation, we hold MOL Safety Conferences annually in five major crew deployment bases-Japan, the Philippines, Croatia, India, and Indonesia. At the Safety Conference, we gather crew members who are on leave from MOL opperating vessels. By introducing our safety initiatives and reviewing accidents that have occurred on our ships, we strive to foster a company-wide safety culture.

Safety Campaign

In order to ensure the world’s highest level of safety and quality, it is crucial to eliminate all incidents and occupational injuries. Therefore, we are conducting safety campaign aimed at improving each employee's safety awareness and fostering a culture of safety. In this campaign, we have adopted the catchphrase "MY GOAL ZERO HARM", and conduct case studies and discussions with the crew both in-person and online. Through this campaign, we are encouraging a renewed recognition of the risks that exist on board and a review of unsafe behaviors that could lead to serious accidents. The information and suggestions obtained through exchanges of opinions with the crew are shared within the company and among our operating ships, and are utilized to further strengthen our safe operation system.

Operational Safety Workshops

As a part of our activities to foster a strong safety culture, these periodic workshops are held for land-based executives and employees. They are designed to further increase individual employees' safety awareness, and recognize that everyone, not just those at sea, has a role to play in safe operation.

E-learning of Safety Culture

As part of our efforts to foster a culture of safety, we conduct e-learning on safety culture for executives and employees of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Group companies. We provide opportunities for all employees, including those at Group companies, to learn lessons learned from past serious accidents and how to promote a safety culture, in an effort to raise employee safety awareness.

Dispatching ingormation to internal audiences -SOSC CHANNEL-

In March 2021, SOSC launched the "SOSC CHANNEL" on its internal portal site. Through approximately five-minute videos, we share knowledge about safe navigation by introducing explanations of topics such as typhoons and pirates, as well as cases of risks that were avoided through SOSC's advice.

Kashima-nada Beach Clean-Up: Never forget the Grounding incident of the GIANT STEP

In 2006, our company's large iron ore carrier, "GIANT STEP," ran aground and sank off Kashima, resulting in the death and missing of 10 crew members. To prevent such a tragedy from happening again and to keep the lessons of the accident from fading, we conduct a clean-up of the Kashima coast every year with our group's executives and employees. Through this activity, we aim to foster a culture of safety, raise awareness of marine and global environmental conservation, and support the sustainable development of the local community.
