MOL Conducts 4th Online Work Experience Event
- Ongoing Efforts to Promote the Attractiveness of Working in the Ocean Shipping Industry -

April 12, 2023

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that on March 28, it held an online work experience event called "Ocean shipping industry- carried by ships, new value is created" as a special spring break event for students. About 160 elementary and junior high school students from Japan and overseas took part in the event, and some of them participated along with their family members. Held for the fourth time since it was inaugurated in 2021, the event featured the newly appointed MOL Elementary and Junior High School Student Ambassadors (Note 1), who took office in October 2022. It also focused on the theme of the supply chain, from transport of iron ore, which in turn is made into steel for automobiles, which are then exported to markets around the world. The ambassadors conveyed the appeal of ocean transport, which has continued for centuries, driving the global economy and delivering new value. An MOL employee stationed in Perth, Australia with the Iron Ore Carrier Division joined in from the local office and explained how iron ore is transported and how the iron ore is then turned into automobiles.

Participants asked questions about ships and voyages, such as "How many crewmembers are onboard a large vessel?,""How much iron ore can be loaded on the biggest ship?," and "What happens if the Captain gets sick?" They were also curious about MOL's response to environmental issues, plans for zero-emission vessels and the Wind Challenger, a hard sail wind propulsion system that saw its first practical use aboard an MOL-operated ship last year. In a follow-up questionnaire, MOL received comments such as "The example of importing iron ore, processing it in Japan, and exporting it was very easy to understand," and "I learned that many different ships play an active role." The participants were able to gain a better understanding of ships and the shipping industry.

Participants will receive an eco-bag, stickers, postcards of retro posters, and other exclusive MOL merchandise along with the event materials at a later date.

MOL will continue activities to create a prosperous future from the blue sea by reaching out to children as the future generation, and explaining the vital role of ocean shipping, which supports logistics 24/7, as well as the company's responses to environmental issues and initiatives to realize a sustainable future.
