Crewmembers of MOL Group-Managed LNG Vessel Earn IMO Commendation for 2025 Rescue Operation

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Jotaro Tamura; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) today announced that crewmembers of the LNG carrier LNG SATURN ^(Note), managed by its group company MOL Global Ship Management Pte. Ltd., (President: Mitsuhisa Tanimoto; Headquarters: Singapore), have received a Letter of Commendation in the IMO "Honours for Exceptional Bravery at Sea" category from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations agency responsible for maritime affairs and top authoritative body in the global maritime industry. This is the first time a vessel owned, managed, or operated by a Japanese shipping company has received this commendation.

Recipients of the commendation, established in 2007 to recognize individuals or organizations that have shown exceptional courage in saving lives at sea or protecting the marine environment, are selected by the IMO Council based on evaluations of the chairs of IMO committees and international maritime organizations.

In 2026, more than 50 nominations were submitted worldwide, resulting in the selection of one Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, two Certificates of Commendation, and 11 Letters of Commendation.

In November 2025, the LNG Saturn joined efforts to rescue the crewmembers of the cargo ship KM. Limadai 8, which had sunk in the Strait of Malacca. The commendation recognizes the crewmembers' skillful maneuvering of the 288 meter long vessel under severe sea conditions as sunset approached, resulting in the rescue of six survivors after more than six hours of continuous efforts.
