MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy Welcomes Students from Japanese Merchant Marine Academies

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that its operated MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy Inc. (MMMA, Note) in the Philippines hosted students from Japanese merchant marine schools for an international exchange program. MMMA welcomed students and instructors from the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Oshima College, who visited from March 10 to 16, 2024. Another group from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology visited from March 17 to 23.

This was the first practical international exchange program with Oshima College, which sent five students and two faculty members. The program with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology had been suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic but was resumed after a four-year hiatus. The school sent two faculty members and eight students, including three women.

In this program, Japanese students ate and shared living quarters with MMMA students, attended the same lectures, and participated in practical training using simulators and actual ship equipment in the bridge and engine room at MMMA's "Ship in Campus."

The program also included cultural exchanges, which featured students performing songs and folk dances. One of the participating students commented, "Not only did I broaden my sense of values by experiencing different cultures abroad, but I also made friends from other countries who share the same aspirations as I do."

MOL will continue to contribute to the development of highly skilled personnel who will support the future of ocean shipping from a global perspective by deepening exchanges between the MMMA and Japanese seafarer education institutions. It also maintains an ongoing commitment to training seafarers and creating jobs that align with 'Contributing to the growth and development of people and communities,' one of the MOL Group's Sustainability Issues (Materiality). This commitment includes supporting people's day-to-day fundamentals as part of its safety-focused operations as a responsible custodian of a social infrastructure business.
